com-是個構(gòu)詞能力很強(qiáng)的原生詞綴，它來自拉丁介詞cum,原意是with,在構(gòu)詞中又發(fā)展出together,以及altogether或completely（表示加強(qiáng)詞義）的意思。com-有co-,col-,con-,cor,coun-五種變體，其用法取決于詞根字母。具體地說，com-用在b,m,p,f之前；col-用在l之前；cor-用在r之前；co-出現(xiàn)在元音字母h,gn之前；而con-則用在其余的輔音字母之前。值得注意的是，自十五世紀(jì)以來，co-變成英語的派生詞綴，能跟動詞、名詞、形容詞相綴合，表示together,joint等意思。這時，它沒有形體變化，可以出現(xiàn)在任何字母之前（往往帶有連接字符）。由于com-的導(dǎo)體比較多，我們最好依照它的構(gòu)詞特點(diǎn)分別介紹它的派生詞。詞外com-還有一些同義前綴，如syn-也具有“聯(lián)合”的含義。

先看幾個以com-,col-,cor-開頭的原生派生詞。

1.combat [com- = with 與；bat = to beat 打→“與...打仗”]
vt.跟...戰(zhàn)斗，反對
舉例：We must combat diseases with better health programs. 我們必須用更得力的衛(wèi)生計(jì)劃與疾病作斗爭。

2.commit [com- = altogether 完全；mit = to sent 送→“to sent altogether完全送去”]

3.compose [com- =together 一起；pos = to put 放；-e →“放在一起”]

4.collide [col-(com-) = together 一起；lid = to strike 撞；-e →“撞在一起”]

5.correspond [cor-(com-) = with 與；respond =to answer 應(yīng)答→"...相方應(yīng)答”]
vi. 符合，一致;通信
舉例：His promise and his performance do not correspond. 他的言行不一。

6.collaborate [col(com)= with +labor(=work)一起工作]
vi. 合作，協(xié)作
舉例： The conductor collaborated brilliantly with the members of the orchestra. 那位指揮家和交響樂團(tuán)的成員合作得非常出色。

下面各舉一例子說明con-出現(xiàn)在其它輔音字母前的情況。

1.concentrate [con-(com-)=together 一起；centr=centre 中心；-ate v.= to cause to be 使→“使共處于一中心”]

舉例：They condoled with the widow at the funeral. 他們在葬禮上向死者遺孀表示哀悼。

3.conform [con-(com-)=with 功能；form = to shape 造型→與...一起造型→]

舉例：If you wish to be a memeber,you must conform to the rules of our club. 你要想加入我們俱樂部，就得遵守它的規(guī)則。

4.congest [con-(com-)=together 一起；gest = to carry 運(yùn)送→“都送到一起來”→]

下面是原生詞綴co- 出現(xiàn)在元音字母及h,gn前的詞例子。

舉例： English "father" and Latin "pater" are cognate words. 英語單詞father 與拉丁語的pater 是同源詞。
