前綴a- = on,in

前綴a-是來源于本族語的派生前綴他原是古英語的一個介詞，其意思相當(dāng)于現(xiàn)在的on,in等。作為一個介詞性前綴a-一般加在名詞前，也可以加在能充當(dāng)名詞使用的動詞之前，有時還可以加在形容詞之前，所生成的派生詞是句法相當(dāng)于介詞短語的形容詞或副詞值得注意的是，帶有a-的形容詞，在句子中多充當(dāng)表語或后位定語。前綴a-除了有on,in 意思外，還有"to,at,of,for,from,out,not"(aboard,aside,asleep)等意思。另外它還有大多數(shù)前綴共有的"intensive"(arise,awake)的含義。此外，前綴a在輔音字母m,v前變形為ab-,意為"away"(amend,aversion);在輔音字母sc,sp,st前變?yōu)閍d,意為"to"(ascend),aspire,astringent);作為前綴an-在輔音字母前面的省略形式，意為"not,without"(achromatic)。
