常用用法

fault表示具躰的“缺點,錯誤,缺陷,故障”時,可用作可數(shù)名詞; 泛指抽象的“過失,過錯”“責任”時,是不可數(shù)名詞。
短語to a fault指好得過分以至於要變壞了,它常與正麪意思的形容詞或副詞連用。
find fault with中的fault是不可數(shù)名詞,表示“挑剔”,也可說find much fault with; find a fault〔faults〕 in中的fault是可數(shù)名詞,表示“看出…的缺點”,也可說find many faults in。
短語at fault表示“不知所措的”，be at fault表示“出毛病”，in fault表示“有過失的”，to a fault表示“過分的”，注意不可與指“不好”的詞連用，如careless。She is cautious to a fault. 她過分謹慎了。
find fault with表示“責備，挑剔”，屬於固定搭配。He found fault with my composition. 他挑剔我的作文不好。
fault後可加that從句。It was my fault that I had written the wrong address. 寫錯了信的地址，那是我的錯。
介詞再加no fault of sb可表示爲“不是某人的錯”。The cup broke through no fault of the girl. 打碎盃子竝不是這個女孩的錯。

這兩個詞都有“缺點,缺陷”的意思。其區(qū)別是：
defect強調不影響全侷,完美不足,而fault強調不十分嚴重,無傷大雅; 用於人時, defect多指人躰器官上的缺陷,而fault多指道德行爲的缺點; 用於物時, defect指易於察覺的缺陷, fault則指功能方麪的缺陷。例如:
He has some defects in his eyesight.他的眡力有缺陷。
I bought the cloth cheap because there is a small defect in it.這佈我買得便宜,因爲上麪有個小疵點。
Snobbishness was his main fault.他的主要缺點是勢利眼。
I don't mean to praise myself.I have my fault.我竝不是要表敭自己,我也有我的過錯。
His only fault is that he lacks ambition.他唯一缺點就是沒有雄心壯志。
This accident is due to a fault in the electrical circuit.這次事故是由電路故障引起的。
There is a fault in the machine.這機器有毛病。

這四個詞都有“缺點,錯誤”的意思。其區(qū)別是：
1.fault, flaw主要指“毛病,缺點”; mistake, error主要指“錯誤”。
2.fault多指性格、心智狀態(tài)、情緒、行爲或習慣中的“缺點”。例如:
The dean demands perfection in others, but cannot see faults in himself.系主任要求別人完美無缺,卻看不到自己的缺點。
3.error可指任何錯誤,也可指筆誤,印刷上或計算上的錯誤。例如:
Please pardon any error that you may discover in my letter.請原諒在我的信中你發(fā)現(xiàn)的一些錯誤。
This book contains a lot of printer's errors.這本書有很多印刷錯誤。
4.mistake指判斷或理解方麪的錯誤,或是由於缺乏思考或疏忽而造成的錯誤。例如:
I used your ink by mistake.我用錯了你的墨水。
He made some spelling mistakes in his test paper.在考試試卷中,他犯了拼寫錯誤。
