15世紀(jì)初期進(jìn)入英語，直接源自中世紀(jì)拉丁語的resultare，意為導(dǎo)致；最初源自古典拉丁語的resilire，意為復(fù)興，彈回。

result的基本意思是“發(fā)生,產(chǎn)生”,指某原因必然導(dǎo)致的狀態(tài)、情形或事變。常用于可感知的事物。用作不及物動詞,常與from, at連用。

result作名詞時的基本意思是“結(jié)果,效果,后果”,指某原因所產(chǎn)生的最終結(jié)果,而不是眼前的結(jié)果,有時可指一種獨(dú)特的、出乎意料的結(jié)果,作此解時,用單復(fù)數(shù)形式均可。
result引申還可作“成效”解。
result還可表示“人、球隊、團(tuán)體參加考試或競賽的結(jié)果、成績”。作此解時,一般用復(fù)數(shù)形式。
