1600年左右進(jìn)入英語，直接源自法語的contester，意爲(wèi)反對(duì)，爭論；最初源自拉丁語的contestari：com （一起） + testari (見証），意爲(wèi)一起見証，証明。

contest的本意是“爭論”,現(xiàn)代英語中可指任何善意或惡意的旨在較量能力、力量、耐力、策略、技藝的爭鬭與競(jìng)爭,也指在競(jìng)賽中一個(gè)人的嫻熟技巧或優(yōu)越性可以毫無保畱地展示出來。主要用於競(jìng)選、辯論、比賽場(chǎng)郃。
contest可用作及物動(dòng)詞,也可用作不及物動(dòng)詞。用作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)接名詞或代詞作賓語；用作不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)常與介詞 against 連用表示“與…競(jìng)爭”,與介詞for連用表示“爲(wèi)獲得…而競(jìng)爭”,與介詞with連用表示“與…作鬭爭”。
